Whom The Lord Blesses!

This past week my study of God’s word has led me through an exploration of the lives of some of the stalwarts in the Bible. Throughout my study, the Holy Spirit has been constantly drawing my attention to Abraham. In this post, I’ll share a little of what stood out to me.

In Genesis 13:9, we meet Abram, before his name was changed to Abraham, in the process of separating from his nephew Lot. I thought it truly interesting that Abram told Lot, “Let’s not quarrel,…Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

Did you see that? He was literally affirming God’s promise to bless him. Yep, he was standing on ‘the Word of God’, and saying to Lot, ‘it really doesn’t matter where I go, because God has promised to bless me. So you choose what works best for you, and I’ll accept the other option.’ Abram was confident that God’s blessing would find him whether he went to the left or the right! No fight, no fuss, no need to quarrel.

For those who aren’t familiar with the story, let me give you some context, so you know why he was so confident. In Genesis 12:1-3, God told Abram, “I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Can you even begin to comprehend that? Not just people in his town or his country, but the entire earth. Now that’s a blessing!

If you think that’s awesome, look at what Galatians 3: 26-29 says. “…through faith… you are God’s children in union with Christ Jesus. So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles… If you belong to Christ, then you are the descendants of Abraham and will receive what God has promised (to Abraham).

In case you missed it, Paul is talking about you. That’s right, the promises that God made to your great, great, great…great grandfather Abraham are yours. This is the perfect time to pause and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to begin to grasp the magnitude of that kingdom positioning.

When 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Anyone who is joined to Christ (by salvation) is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come., it’s not just saying that we are forgiven of our sins. It means exactly what it says, ‘we are new creations with a new bloodline, with an entirely new existence in the Kingdom of God’.

For many years I would read scriptures and dismiss them as having an alternative meaning. But the Holy Spirit has been challenging me to stop making God’s word complicated. I’m learning to stand on the word of God. To trust with simple faith that God’s word means what it says. If the Holy Spirit wants me to gain a deeper understanding of a scripture, He will give me that ‘sight’.

When Mark 11 says Jesus cursed a fig tree and it died, that’s exactly what it’s saying. When Jesus told his disciples in Luke 10:19, “I have given you authority; so you can trample down snakes and scorpions, and all the Enemy’s forces; and you will remain completely unharmed….”, that’s exactly what He meant.

The promises made to Abraham’s lineage are ours because the scripture means what it says, when it says that ‘through salvation, we became descendants of Abraham‘.

Let’s go a little deeper. After Lot chose what he thought was the better portion of land, God blessed Abram again. Chapter 13: 14-16 tells us, “The Lord said to Abram … “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like, (as numerous as) the dust of the earth….” God honored Abram’s faith. God didn’t give Abram only the land on the left and right, He gave Abram the land within a 360° view, which included, I must add, all the land that was just taken by Lot.

What is it that has been taken away from you, after God promised to bless you? No fight, no fuss, no need to quarrel. Stand firmly on the Word of God, He sees and will restore all that was stolen and more.

Just as God promised, today, it is impossible to count Abraham’s offspring. Again, I remind you, you are numbered in the offspring of Abraham. Take a minute to review and dwell on the first promise mentioned above. Is that your reality, whatever it’s supposed to look like in accordance with your God-given purpose? Ask the Holy Spirit to give you clear sight of what your reality is supposed to look like, and if it doesn’t match your present circumstances, ask Him to teach you how to make them align.

Let’s look at Abraham’s grandson Jacob. In obedience to his parents, Jacob set out for Mesopotamia to marry one of his uncle Laban’s daughters. In Genesis 28:10–15, at Bethel, on the way to Laban’s house, God affirmed His promise to Abraham, by showing it to Jacob in a dream. Once again God promised, ‘to give him the land, that his offspring would be innumerable, and that through him and his offspring, all the families of the earth would be blessed.’

Even after Jacob was swindled by his uncle and ended up having to marry both of Laban’s daughters instead of just Rachel, God’s blessings upon Jacob were evident. If you’re not familiar with the story, it’s in Genesis 29:1-31:55.

When Jacob decided to return to his home, in lieu of wages, he asks his uncle for “every black lamb and every spotted or speckled young goat.” Laban agreed, then tried to cheat Jacob again, by removing the sheep that would have gone to Jacob and sending them away.

Here’s where God intervened and blessed Jacob. God gave Jacob the idea to take green tree branches, strip them so they had white stripes, place the striped branches in front of the water troughs when the healthy animals were drinking, and allow them to breed in front of the branches. This caused the offspring to be black, speckled, and spotted. Jacob eventually had all of the more healthy sheep.

I know it’s not logical, and that’s the real point. God isn’t limited to the logical, He’s the God of the impossible. Luke 18:27 reminds us that, “What appears humanly impossible is more than possible with God. For God can do what man cannot.”

What impossible situation are you facing today, you descendent of Abraham and recipient of the promise of God’s blessings? Trust God, and obey Him even when He gives you illogical ideas.

Has He told you to walk around your walls of Jericho for 7 days, then shout praises to Him on the 7th day, so that they would fall? Has He told you to step into your River Jordan, when the waters are unseasonably high, so you could cross safely? Has He asked you to stretch out your rod toward your red sea as the armies are chasing behind you, so you could walk across on dry land, then watch them drown behind you? Is He instructing you to form an army from the valley of dry bones in front of you, by talking to them? Is he asking you to stoop down and reach for the hem of his gown, to be made whole?

I want to encourage you today, to follow Mary’s instruction to the servants at the wedding in Cana of Galilee where the wine had run out, “Do whatever he tells you”, (John 2:5b). No fight, no fuss, no need to quarrel. Just simple obedience.

Heavenly Father I pray for your child reading this today. Help her to truly accept her reality of being a descendant of Abraham, and therefore an heir of the promise. I pray that she will begin to intentionally walk in her birthright promises daily, being conscious of the fact that you don’t lie, or go back on your promises. As she stands on your word by faith, begin to open supernatural doors, clear supernatural pathways and align things around her, in accordance with her promised blessings, so that she may live in the center of your purpose for her life daily. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

If you’ve never asked Christ to be Lord of your life please pray this prayer. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sin please forgive me, cleanse me, and make me your child. I commit my life to you today. Amen.
