Walking in Authority

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 (NLT)

God’s word admonishes us to think differently than the world does, to set our minds on things above, and to be heavenly minded. When we recognize that we are seated in ‘heavenly realms…’ as Ephesians 2:6 says, we will notice that although we live on the earth we have heavenly authority. Heavenly authority results in supernatural ability and provides access to supernatural resources.

In His word, God promises to supply all our needs according to His riches. The word ‘all’ includes spiritual needs, mental needs, emotional needs, and physical needs. Whatever we need He will provide. The provision is dependent only on God’s riches and is not limited by our IQ, bank accounts, or any other earthly factor. He will supply whatever you need when you need it. This requires that we live with a consciousness of who God is and that we are attentive to his voice so that we can hear and obey Him.

Obedience to the voice of God allows us to be in the right place at the right time to receive what He has for us. If we are to be obedient to the Lord, we have to be able to recognize His voice. If you don’t know His voice, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you. Ask Him for help to cultivate the ability to tune out the other voices so that you can hear Him clearly.

Reading and studying God’s word helps us to get to know Him better. The more intimately we know Him, the better we can hear His voice and discern his will. God will never instruct us to do anything that contradicts His word. Knowing God’s word will also help us to know who we are in Christ and enable us to walk in the authority we have as children of God.

We sometimes feel small, insignificant, or unnecessary when we try to measure ourselves against some of the great people who live today. At those times we need to remember that the Great Creator of the Universe took the time to ‘knit us together in our mother’s wombs’, and preserved our lives so that we still exist today. We have each been placed on this earth for a reason.

Your birth was not an accident and you were not born to simply use up air and occupy space. Jeremiah 29:17 says that God has a good plan for your life. God can use all of your experiences to fulfill His plan for your life. He will even turn around the bad experiences to benefit you according to Romans 8:28, “…God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.”

Fulfilling God’s plan requires action on our part; the children of Israel had to get up and walk out of Egypt to attain freedom from slavery. They had to cross the Red Sea and the Jordan river, tasks that were both naturally impossible. In Joshua Chapter 6 the Israelites were obedient, even though they probably felt and looked silly marching around Jericho and blowing rams’ horns. As a result of their obedience, the Great Walls of Jericho collapsed as they shouted on the seventh day, another naturally impossible feat.

Christ, while He was on the earth, “faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin.” He experienced all the human infirmities that we experience today, yet He fulfilled his purpose. He knew who He was: He understood, accepted, and walked in the authority that was His. In Matthew 28:18 He said, “all power is given unto me in Heaven and on earth.” He was heavenly minded, so His heavenly purpose was His main focus. Even as a child He informed His parents that He was ‘doing the will of His Father’.

Our authority as children of God surpasses mere earthly authority: we have heavenly authority. God has given us power beyond the devil’s power. He said in Luke 10:19 “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.” Pause for a moment and consider the implications of that verse.

The choice is ours, we can choose to live in subjection or we can choose to rise above mere humanity and tap into our supernatural (heavenly) power and authority. Let me repeat this biblical concept. God our Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally, knows all things and can do absolutely anything. When we live in close communication with God and obey Him, we can operate on a supernatural level and have access to supernatural provision.

In Genesis 18:11, Sarah, knowing that she was long past the age of having children, laughed when she was told that she would bear a son. She became impatient with God and attempted to assist in fulfilling the promise, by giving her maidservant to her husband Abraham as a surrogate. Hagar bore Ishmael by Abraham, and later Sarah gave birth to Isaac, as God had promised. Eventually, Sarah became so angry, that Hagar was forced to take Ishmael and run to the wilderness. Like Sarah, we sometimes cause a mess by our impatience and lack of faith in God’s promises.

As we journey along this path of faith, let us be conscious of who we are and walk in the authority that is ours through Christ. Let us also submit to God’s perfect will, confidently knowing that He knows what is best for us, and “… will work out His plans for our lives.” Psalm 138:8
