Walking in Authority (Christ Our Example)

“Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” – Mark 14:36 (NLT)

In order to walk in spiritual authority, we must submit to the authority of God, not as an occasional happening but as a lifestyle. Christ was the perfect example of how Christians should live and walk in the divine authority that results from our relationship with God.

Our complete dependence upon God is noted in John 15:5b, “apart from me (God) you can do nothing,” and in Philippians 4:13a “… I can do everything through Christ….”

Christ came to the earth to do the will of His Father. He knew His purpose and lived in complete subjection to the authority of God. His goal wasn’t to make friends or please people, in fact, His ministry offended many of His contemporaries.

Jesus used the power associated with His authority, to overcome anything that attempted to distract or hinder Him from fulfilling his purpose. We as believers should strive to fulfill our purpose with the same ferocity.

As He walked in purpose, doing the will of the Father, everything He needed to accomplish His assigned task was provided. When He opened His mouth words of wisdom and power came out, baffling scoffers and drawing thousands of followers. He never went hungry, He always had clothing and shelter and even transportation was provided when he required it.

God provides everything we need to fulfill our divine purpose, as Paul reminds the Church at Philippi, in Philippians 4:18a+19, “At the moment I have all I need—and more… And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

When we walk in purpose we have the authority to call things into being. Hebrews 1:1 says, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. In Mark 11:22-24, Jesus said to His disciples, “Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen…I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.“

Faith is a powerful demonstration of our belief and trust in God. If we truly believe that His plans for us are for good, we will not be afraid to trust him to take care of us, as He promised. Our focus will then shift from being consumed by the cares of this world, to fulfilling our purpose. When we do this, those gifts and talents that lie dead within us will begin to stir and come back to life.

According to the prophet Joel in chapter 2 verse 25, “I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.” Many of us have been endowed with spiritual gifts that lie dormant because we are busy worrying instead of walking in authority. Our gifts are for the benefit of the body, so when we fail to utilize our gifts, the body becomes deficient.

As believers, we need to ‘stop being consumed with ourselves’, put aside selfish pride, and walk in purpose. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need”.

Quite often, we follow the pattern of the world and seek everything we need first, then use whatever time and energy we have left to seek the Kingdom of God. God’s Kingdom doesn’t operate by the same laws as the world, we live by, His Word, not ‘bread’, which represents that which the world provides. See Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:4 or Luke 4:4.

The Body of Christ (the church) is weak and feeble today when compared with the early Church in the book of Acts, because the early church walked in spiritual authority. They waited in obedience until they were filled with the Holy Spirit, then they did exploits: healing the sick, raising the dead, and proclaiming the Gospel of Christ.

When threatened, the intercessors of the early church prayed, “give us…great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Acts 4:29-31

Do you get that? They asked God for boldness and requested increased power because the focus wasn’t self-preservation, but the fulfillment of God’s purpose. Today, when faced with challenges, many of us cower and give up instead of reaching out to Christ, our source, and requesting what we need to overcome the challenge.

It is clearly evident that God answered the intercessors, as He has promised to do when we pray. Firstly, “the place where they were meeting, trembled and shook…”, and it was later reported in Acts 5:12-13 that, “the apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people…all the people had high regard for them.”

The God of the early Church is the same God we serve today. Just as He equipped them when they waited until the appointed time, He will also equip us to do whatever He asks us to do.

Are you called to be an intercessor, a writer, a teacher, a choir director, or a missionary to Barbados, Cambodia, or Ethiopia? Has God laid it on your heart to open a bookstore or a thrift shop, or to start a gym for Christian women, or to solve global hunger? Whatever He has purposed for you to do He will tell you, and He will provide everything that you need to accomplish the task, as you walk in divine authority.

For those who are called to be givers, who support missionaries and ministries locally or elsewhere, don’t allow talks of an economic downturn to cause you to stop giving. God will continue to provide for you and your family as Luke 6:38 says “Give…Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap.” He will give you ideas to build wealth. Listen and obey!

Be aware that we have an enemy, the devil who will attempt to steal our desire to walk in purpose, to kill the vision that God has placed within our hearts, and to destroy any hope of ever accomplishing our purpose. Remember also that the devil is the father of lies.

Most of all remember that “God has given you power over all of the devil’s power,” Luke 10:19. When we walk in our God-given authority, the devil becomes a persistently defeated foe. Satan can’t stop us from fulfilling our purpose unless we allow him to.

As believers, who portray Christ to the world, we need to walk in the authority that we have been given by virtue of being Children of God.

We must say like Paul in Galatians 2:20-21, “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

We must follow Christ’s example, He said in John 4:34, “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing His work.” Like Christ when we walk in purpose we will notice that our needs are met, that we have the strength and wisdom we need to overcome the enemy, the patience and endurance we need to face and endure trials and “everything we need for living a godly life”, 2 Peter 1:3.

Heavenly Father, I pray for your child reading this today. May she, by your Holy Spirit, truly grasp the authority that she has in you as she pursues her purpose with laser sharp focus. Give her boldness, wisdom, and insight when she faces challenges, and may she call upon you whenever trouble surfaces.

Bless all of the efforts of her hands, abundantly. Help her to view you as her source, and may all of the noise around her be drowned out by the thundering of your voice providing her with instructions.

Bless her family and may everyone with whom she comes into contact see, feel, and experience your anointing upon her life. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen!

If you’ve never asked Christ to be Lord of your life please pray this prayer. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sin please forgive me, cleanse me, and make me your child. I commit my life to you today. Amen.
